In the truck workshop and HGV sector, watertight electrical connections are a fundamental requirement. Superseal connectors are widely used across the trailer and commercial vehicle industry, but assembling them correctly depends on using the right components throughout. The Superseal grommet is a critical element in this process: a small rubber seal that is threaded onto the cable before crimping, and which forms a tight seal around the cable jacket once the contact is inserted into the connector housing.

Superseal grommets are available in different versions, each matched to a specific cable cross-section range. For smaller conductors between 0.5 mm² and 1 mm², a green grommet is used. The green colour coding allows for quick visual identification during assembly and reduces the risk of mixing up grommets intended for different cable sizes. For conductors between 1 mm² and 1.5 mm², a separate grommet version provides the correct fit for that diameter range. Both versions are genuine TE Connectivity components, designed specifically for Superseal connectors.

In the context of trailer and HGV applications, Superseal connectors are installed in locations that are regularly exposed to road spray, rain, pressure washing, cleaning agents and mechanical vibration. A connector that is not fully sealed at every position fails to perform its protective function, creating a risk of moisture ingress, corrosion and electrical failure. This applies not only to positions that carry a cable, but equally to any unused positions within the connector.

To seal unused positions, blind plugs and cavity plugs are available. A red blind plug is used in positions intended for 2.5 mm² to 3.0 mm² cable where no cable is fitted. A blue cavity plug serves the same purpose in connectors where a position carries no cable at all. Both types maintain the overall seal of the connector by closing off any opening that would otherwise allow moisture or contamination to enter. Without these plugs in every unused position, the connector loses the watertight integrity that makes it suitable for outdoor and underbody applications.

Alongside the Superseal grommets and blind plugs, a red cable grommet for 2.5 mm² cable is also available. This component is used when routing cables through metal panels, chassis sections or enclosures. It protects the cable jacket and conductors from sharp edges and metal burrs at the entry point. The red colour coding assists the technician in selecting the correct grommet size when working with multiple cable cross-sections at the same time.

In the truck workshop, working with Superseal connectors is a routine part of both new builds and maintenance work. Whether assembling a new trailer, replacing a damaged connector on an HGV, or extending an electrical system on a bodywork installation, the Superseal grommet is the component that gives the connection its sealing properties. Using the correct grommet for the cable cross-section in use, combined with blind plugs in all unused positions, ensures that the finished connection remains reliable and protected throughout the service life of the vehicle.
