In the truck workshop and the broader HGV sector, batteries of various sizes are in daily use. Not as primary power sources for vehicle systems, but as essential energy sources for the measuring equipment, detectors, remote controls, wireless tools and electronic modules that technicians and trailer builders rely on every working day. Professional operations require reliable batteries that deliver the correct voltage when needed, without unexpected failure at a critical moment.

The most common formats in a professional workshop environment are the AAA (LR-03) and AA (LR-6) alkaline cells. The LR-03 delivers a nominal voltage of 1.5 volts and is compact enough for small handheld devices, wireless sensors and digital measuring instruments used daily in the truck workshop. The AA LR-6 is the most universally applicable format in the world and forms the standard power source for a wide range of professional equipment, from multimeters to portable testing systems used by trailer builders when working on electrical installations on semi-trailers and drawbar trailers.

For devices with higher current consumption or longer operating requirements, larger formats are available. The LR-14, also known as C-size, offers significantly greater capacity than the AA cell at the same nominal voltage of 1.5 volts. This format suits measuring equipment and portable lighting used more intensively, for example during extended inspections of trailer electrical systems or work on semi-trailer chassis. The LR-20, internationally designated as D-size, provides the largest capacity within the standard cylindrical alkaline range and delivers long-lasting, stable power for heavier portable equipment used in trailer construction.

The 9V alkaline cell, designated 6LR61, has a firm place in smoke detectors, CO detectors, signal generators and multimeters. In a professional truck and HGV workshop context, CO detectors and gas alarms are relevant safety devices, particularly in enclosed workshop spaces. Multimeters and signal testing equipment operating on 9 volts are used when diagnosing electrical systems on vehicles and trailers.

Beyond cylindrical alkaline formats, coin cells form a distinct category with a specific function in the truck and trailer sector. The CR1632, CR2016 and CR2025 are lithium manganese dioxide coin cells with a nominal voltage of 3 volts. They are used in keyless entry systems, remote controls for trailer couplings or tail lifts, and in the memory backup circuits of electronic control modules. On modern semi-trailers and trucks, where an increasing number of electronic modules are installed, coin cells are present as backup power for memory functions during power interruptions. The lithium manganese dioxide chemistry of these cells ensures stable voltage output across a wide temperature range, which is relevant given the varying climate conditions in a workshop environment.

A related but distinct category within battery accessories are battery isolators. These devices are not batteries in the traditional sense, but form an essential part of the battery architecture on trucks and trailers. A battery isolator based on diode technology splits the charging current from the alternator across multiple batteries simultaneously, without allowing the individual battery banks to exchange energy with each other. This is critically important on vehicles fitted with both a starter battery and one or more service batteries, such as trucks with refrigeration units, tail lifts or electro-hydraulic systems on the trailer. Isolators are available in capacities of 140 amperes, 160 amperes and 250 amperes, with the choice depending on the total charging current in the installation. The 250A variant suits heavier electrical installations on fully loaded trucks with multiple power consumers, while the 140A and 160A variants are sufficient for standard dual-battery configurations.

In the daily practice of the truck workshop, the trailer industry and maintenance of HGV semi-trailers, batteries and battery isolators together form an essential part of a well-equipped operation. Alkaline cells in various sizes ensure that measuring equipment, safety detectors and wireless tools are always ready for use. Coin cells support the electronic modules and access systems that have become standard on modern trucks and semi-trailers. Battery isolators guarantee sufficient starter capacity regardless of the load on the service circuits. By sourcing these components professionally and keeping adequate stock, workshops and trailer builders avoid unnecessary downtime and limitations in diagnostic capability during electrical work on trucks and trailers.
