Spiral wrap
Spiral wrap band is one of the most widely used cable management products in the truck workshop and trailer industry. Its helical structure allows cables to be grouped into a neat, compact bundle without the need for cutting tools or special fasteners. Cables can be inserted or removed at any point simply by unwinding the band, which provides significant flexibility during both initial installation and later maintenance or modifications.
In trailer and HGV bodybuilding environments, cable harnesses are routed along frames, chassis profiles and body structures over considerable distances. Along these routes, bundles are exposed to vibration, mechanical contact and occasionally moisture or chemical fluids. Spiral wrap band provides an effective first layer of organisation and protection, keeping cables together and preventing them from chafing against metal edges or moving parts. For wide bundles such as power feeds to rear lighting clusters or ABS sensor cables on a semi-trailer, wider versions of 20 mm or 27 mm are used. For thin signal cables or sensor wiring in confined areas, narrower widths of 5 mm or 8 mm are the appropriate choice.
A key practical advantage of spiral wrap band over fixed cable ties or heat shrink tubing is its reversibility. In the truck workshop it is common for existing cable runs to be extended or for a faulty cable to be replaced. Spiral wrap band allows the technician to unwind the band, make the necessary change, and re-wrap it without disturbing the rest of the bundle. This saves time and reduces the risk of damaging adjacent cables during rework.
The material used for spiral wrap band is typically polyethylene, which offers resistance to oils, coolants and other fluids commonly encountered around HGV and trailer components. The band is lightweight and easy to cut to length from the roll, making it suitable for applications ranging from short cable runs inside control boxes to long routing paths along a trailer chassis. Because the band is supplied in roll form, the technician can cut exactly the required length and store the remainder for future use.
For bodybuilders and vehicle converters working on special vehicles or superstructures, spiral wrap band is also a standard tool. When routing hydraulic, electrical and vehicle-specific electronic systems alongside each other, the band keeps all lines together without restricting the flexibility of individual components, which is important wherever cable sections must retain freedom of movement.
The width of the band determines how many cables or how large a bundle can be wrapped. Narrow versions at 5 mm and 8 mm suit thin signal and sensor cables. Mid-range widths of 10 mm, 12 mm and 15 mm cover the majority of standard cable bundles in trailer and truck applications. The wider options at 20 mm and 27 mm are intended for heavy power cables, multi-line bundles or combinations of cables and small hoses that need to be routed together.
In the daily operations of a truck workshop or trailer manufacturer, spiral wrap band is a versatile product that appears repeatedly across all types of installations. Whether the work involves wiring a newly built trailer, revising an existing cable harness or adding supplementary electronics to a semi-trailer, spiral wrap band ensures that the installation remains tidy, accessible and easy to service. The combination of straightforward application, reusability and availability in a wide range of widths makes it a permanent fixture in the stock of any professional truck and trailer workshop.
