In the day-to-day operations of a truck workshop, glass fuses are an essential component of the electrical infrastructure of vehicles and trailers. They protect circuits against overcurrent and thereby prevent damage to wiring, lighting, sensors and other electrical components. In trailer construction, glass fuses are used in a wide range of locations throughout the vehicle, from the control of rear lights and marker lights to the protection of electrical control systems on the semi-trailer. It is precisely in this environment that the practical characteristics of the glass fuse become most apparent.

A glass fuse is distinguished by its transparent housing, which allows the condition of the fuse element to be checked directly without the need for disassembly or measuring equipment. A technician in a truck workshop can see at a glance whether a fuse has blown. This saves time during diagnosis and enables fast intervention, including on-site or during maintenance work on a trailer away from the main workshop. In a working environment where vehicle downtime has immediate operational consequences, this visual inspectability is a concrete functional advantage.

Glass fuses are available in two common formats, each with its own area of application. The 20x5mm format is widely used in lighter electrical circuits, such as the protection of signal lighting, electronic control modules and low-power circuits on trailers and commercial vehicles. Current ratings within this format range from 2A for sensitive circuits to 10A for circuits with a slightly higher load. This format fits fuse holders specifically dimensioned for this standard tube type, which are frequently found in the electrical systems of semi-trailers and light trailers.

The 32x6.3mm format, also referred to as the AG format, is intended for heavier applications. In trailer construction and among HGV specialists, this format is used for circuits requiring a higher current load, such as the control of tail lifts, refrigeration units, hydraulic systems or multiple lighting circuits. Current ratings of 15A, 20A, 25A and 30A make this format applicable across a wide range of installations on commercial vehicles and semi-trailers. The fuse holders designed for this format are standard components in the electrical distribution boxes and fuse panels that trailer builders and body builders incorporate into their constructions.

The choice between a 20x5mm and a 32x6.3mm glass fuse depends primarily on the current rating of the circuit to be protected and the fuse holder present in the installation. In a truck workshop it is therefore important to keep both formats and multiple current ratings in stock. Faults in the electrical circuits of a trailer or commercial vehicle do not always occur at a predictable moment, and a quick replacement requires the correct fuse to be immediately available. Wholesalers and transport companies with their own workshop regularly order glass fuses in larger quantities to ensure continuity of maintenance operations.

In practice within the truck and trailer sector, glass fuses are used in both new installations and in the maintenance and repair of existing electrical systems. Trailer builders and body builders incorporate them structurally into the electrical architecture of new semi-trailers and trailers. In the truck workshop they are replaced as part of fault diagnosis or preventive maintenance. The combination of visual inspectability, availability in multiple current ratings and compatibility with standard fuse holders makes the glass fuse a fixed part of the electrical inventory in every professional workshop involved in HGV and trailer electrics.
