A reliable earth connection is the foundation of every electrical installation in a heavy vehicle. In the truck workshop and trailer construction environment, a stable ground connection is not an optional feature but a technical requirement for the correct operation of all onboard electrical systems. Ground straps fulfil a central role in this: they connect the negative terminal of the battery to the chassis and ensure that all consumers share a common, stable reference point for their electrical circuits.

In daily truck workshop practice, technicians regularly encounter the consequences of inadequate or deteriorated ground connections. Faults in lighting systems, issues with ABS modules or unreliable behaviour from the vehicle's onboard computer can in many cases be traced back to high contact resistance in the ground circuit. A ground strap with the correct cross-section and material prevents these problems structurally. Cross-sections ranging from 10mm² to 50mm² cover the full spectrum from light connecting leads to heavy cables for starting large diesel engines.

In trailer construction and HGV semi-trailer assembly, ground straps serve a different but equally important function. Trailers have their own electrical systems for lighting, braking, tail lifts and monitoring equipment. All of these systems must be connected to a reliable ground point. Because a trailer disconnects mechanically from the tractor unit, the internal earthing of the trailer is a self-contained system that must be correctly dimensioned. A central ground strap where multiple connections come together keeps the installation manageable and simplifies maintenance and fault finding.

Material selection is decisive for the service life of the connection in this working environment. Ground straps made from tinned copper offer low contact resistance and resistance to corrosion. Vehicles and trailers are exposed to moisture, road salt, temperature variations and vibration. Untreated copper oxidises rapidly under these conditions, leading to increasing resistance and ultimately an unreliable earth. Tinning protects the copper conductor material and keeps the electrical properties stable over time, even in a moist or corrosive environment such as a chassis frame or the underside of a semi-trailer.

The length of a ground strap largely determines its area of application. Shorter versions of 20 to 25 centimetres are suited to direct connections between the battery clamp and a nearby ground point, such as in a battery compartment or engine bay. Longer variants of 30 to 40 centimetres or more offer the necessary reach when the battery and the central earth point are further apart, which occurs regularly in the chassis layout of trucks and trailers. Ground straps with lengths of 200 to 400 millimetres and a 10 millimetre eye terminal are designed for centralising multiple ground connections at one point, which improves the structure and clarity of the overall installation.

The connection method is also practically relevant. Crimped cable eyes with an M8 fixing hole allow direct mounting on existing bolt connections or terminal points without additional work on site. In a busy truck workshop or during assembly in trailer construction, this saves time and provides confidence in the quality of the connection. Ground straps supplied with a battery terminal clamp go one step further and offer a ready-to-fit solution for connection to the negative terminal of the battery, without any additional connecting hardware.

In the daily practice of the truck workshop, at trailer builders and HGV specialists, ground straps are used in new builds, overhauls and fault diagnosis. In new builds, the straps are integrated into the electrical wiring during assembly. In the overhaul of older vehicles or trailers, deteriorated or corroded ground connections are replaced with new straps of the correct cross-section for the specific system. In fault diagnosis, ground straps are a first point of inspection: a straightforward replacement can resolve a range of faults that would otherwise require hours of investigation. Dekoff supplies ground straps in the cross-sections and lengths that meet the technical requirements of 12V and 24V vehicle systems, enabling trailer builders, body builders and workshop operations to complete their installations in a professional and durable manner.
