The 13-core trailer cable is the standard solution for electrical connections between towing vehicles and trailers or semi-trailers in professional road transport. As vehicle electronics have become more complex and the demand for additional circuits has grown, the 13-pin connection system has become the norm across the European transport sector. The cable that serves as the physical backbone of this system must meet defined technical standards to guarantee reliable operation under the demanding conditions of daily freight transport.

The FLYY 13-wire cable is the most widely used construction type for standard trailer wiring applications. Its designation reflects the cable's construction: individually insulated conductors enclosed in a PVC outer sheath that provides protection against mechanical stress, moisture ingress and the chemical exposure typical in vehicle environments. The colour-coded conductors follow the European standard for vehicle wiring, enabling installers to connect each core to the correct pin of the 13-pin connector without ambiguity. This structured approach to core identification reduces wiring errors and shortens installation time in busy workshop environments.

Within the 13-core cable category, two cross-sections are most commonly specified: 1mm² and 1.5mm² per conductor. The 1.5mm² variant is the appropriate choice wherever higher current loads are expected. This applies to trailers equipped with electric brakes, refrigeration units or additional lighting systems that draw more current than standard configurations. The larger conductor cross-section reduces electrical resistance, limits voltage drop over extended cable runs and improves thermal performance under sustained load. For semi-trailers with long cable runs between tractor and trailer unit, these properties are technically significant.

A further variant within this category is the FLRYY round trailer cable with a mixed conductor arrangement: nine conductors of 1.5mm² combined with four conductors of 2.5mm². This construction integrates signal circuits and high-current circuits within a single cable body, eliminating the need to route separate power cables alongside the signal wiring. The 2.5mm² conductors are dimensioned for power-intensive applications such as refrigeration compressors or hydraulic lift systems. For trailer builders and body builders working on complex electrical installations, this combined construction simplifies routing and reduces the total number of cables required.

Certain versions of the FLRYY 13-core trailer cable carry ADR/GGVS certification. ADR is the European agreement governing the international carriage of dangerous goods by road, while GGVS refers to the corresponding German national regulation. Vehicles operating under these frameworks must use approved components throughout, including the wiring. ADR/GGVS-certified cables are required to meet defined standards for flame resistance, mechanical robustness and electrical performance under extreme conditions. For trailers dedicated to or occasionally used for the transport of dangerous goods, specifying a certified 13-pin trailer wiring cable is a regulatory requirement, not an optional upgrade.

ISO 11446 defines the technical specifications for 13-pin connectors used between towing vehicles and trailers. The standard sets out the pin assignment, the function allocated to each contact and the electrical load limits per circuit. The 13-core trailer cable translates these specifications into a physical installation: each conductor corresponds to a defined pin and function within the standardised system. Trailer builders, body builders and vehicle outfitters working with 13-pin electrical systems must select cables whose conductor count and colour coding align with the ISO 11446 pin configuration to ensure the complete installation operates correctly and safely.

In practical workshop use, 13-core trailer cable is cut to length for new trailer builds, rewiring projects and electrical system extensions. It is routed through cable conduits, protective looms or fixed directly to the chassis depending on the application. The availability of standardised colour coding, a choice between 1mm², 1.5mm² and mixed cross-sections, and ADR/GGVS-certified variants makes 13-core trailer cable a technically versatile component in the electrical installation of any trailer or semi-trailer operating in European road transport.
